Dushyant Kumar was born in Navada Village of Bijnor District in Uttar Pradesh. He did M.A. in Hindi from Allahbad University. He worked in All India Radio (Aakaashwaani) and a Hindi magazine of that time called 'Naye Patte'.
Dushyant Kumar's ghazals mostly are sharp comments on the governance of his time. Most ghazals in his popular collection 'Saaye Mein Dhoop' are protests of the time when Emergency was declared in India under Indira Gandhi's rule. Despite criticism from scholars he established the pillar of ghazals in Hindi and preferred to write in the language of the common man.
