Maria Wisława Anna Szymborska Wisława Szymborska (1923–2012) was a Polish poet, essayist, translator, and recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature. In Poland, Szymborska's books have sold as well as those of leading prose writers.

Many of her poems touch upon war and terrorism. She wrote poems from unique perspectives, such as "A Cat in an Empty Apartment" (from the perspective of a cat whose owner has died).

Szymborska was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996 for poetry that, with ironic precision, brings to light the historical and biological context in fragments of human reality. This led to her becoming more widely known internationally. Her work has been translated into numerous European languages.
