Soordas
Soordas (approx. 1478–1581) was a legendary saint, poet, and musician of the 'Bhakti Period' in Hindi literature. He was a disciple of Mahaaprabhu Vallabhaachaarya and held the most prominent position among the 'Ashtachhaap' (the eight pre-eminent poets of the time). The core foundation of his poetry is his unwavering love and absolute devotion toward Lord Krishna.

There is a difference of opinion among scholars as to whether he was blind from birth or lost his sight later in life. However, his vivid and detailed descriptions of nature and Krishna’s gestures are so precise that they leave everyone astonished. He portrayed Krishna’s childhood, his mischievous acts, and Mother Yashoda’s love with such life-like detail that he is celebrated as the "Emperor of Vatsalya Ras" (the sentiment of parental affection).

The contributions of Soordas played a vital role in establishing Braj Bhasha as a major literary language. His major works include:

Soor Saagar: His most famous and magnificent work, traditionally believed to contain 1,25,000 verses (though a smaller number are available today).
Soor Saaraavali: A composition that describes the power and the divine glory of the Lord.
Saahitya Laharee: A unique collection of his most exquisite and complex literary verses. [Picture courtesy India Pilgrim Blog]
