Born on 31 July 1940 in Bahadurganj, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, Umaashankar Tiwaaree is a prominent name of the Navageet genre. His works have been published in magazines like 'Dharmayug', 'Saaptaahik Hindustaan', 'Gaganaanchal', 'Navaneet', 'Nayaa Prateek', 'Vaagarth' etc. He was also the literary editor of a four-monthly magazine named 'Samakaaleen Soch' published from Ghazipur.
His three published navageet collections are - Jalate Shahar Men (1968), Dhoop KaDee Hai (1986), Tohafe Kaa(n)chghar Ke (1996). Apart from this, there are two critical essay-collections edited by him - "Navageet ke Pratimaan Aur Aayaam" and "Hindi Ke ShreShTh navageetakaar".
All three of his Navageet collections have been awarded by the Uttar Pradesh Hindee Sansthaan, Lucknow. He also received "Dr. Shambhunaath Singh Nyaas Puraskaar" in 1998 for 'Tohafe Kaa(n)chghar Ke'. In the year 2003, he was awarded the title of Saahitya BhooShaN by Uttar Pradesh Hindee Sansthaan.
He passed away on 28 October 2009.
