About Unicode
Kaavyaalaya uses the Unicode standard to display its Hindi text. Unicode is the
standard today to implement solutions for most of the major languages and
scripts in computers. Most of the latest versions of operating systems and
browsers provide multi-language support via unicode.
Some of the advantages of writing Hindi using unicode:
- It is not dependent on a specific font and platform. The text will be
readable in any software and computer which has support for unicode and has any
unicode font to display the characters of the Devanagari script.
- Further processing can be done to the text, other than just displaying. For
example, sorting and indexing can be done.
This is possible because Unicode provides a unique
number for every character, no matter what the platform or program. Thus, the
character क (ka) has a unique number, instead of sharing a number with
some character of the Roman Script. So also for all other characters of Hindi
(or for that matter, any of the major languages and scripts of the world).
